​Broadspectrum’s Stuart Miles leads an inclusive and diverse team that is 100 per cent local

Located 220 kilometres offshore Western Australia in the Timor Sea, the Ichthys gas field represents the largest discovery of hydrocarbon liquids in Australia in more than 50 years. The Ichthys LNG Project is one of the largest and most complex Liquefied Natural Gas
(LNG) developments in the world. The offshore asset covers an area approximately 40 kilometres by 20 kilometres, at a water depth of around 250 metres. Gas and condensate from Ichthys are exported to onshore facilities near Darwin via an 890-kilometre pipeline.

Broadspectrum’s joint venture with Actemium, TRACE, provides maintenance services to the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG onshore processing facilities at Bladin Point, near Darwin, which produces and ships approximately 8.9 million tonnes of LNG per year at peak production. The joint venture (JV) provides maintenance services, including planning, coordination and execution, and delivers shutdowns and brownfield projects to the onshore plant.

For Stuart Miles, it’s been a winding road to his current role leading maintenance services at TRACE.

A unique career trajectory

Stuart’s journey with the company began 14 years ago, as Project Services Manager for Transfield Services (rebranded to Broadspectrum) in Brisbane. He later moved to Alberta, Canada as a Project Services Manager with Flint Transfield Services for the company’s $1.1 billion five-year contract servicing Suncor’s oil sands operations, before taking over as General Manager of Sustaining Projects. From Canada, Stuart returned to Queensland as Operations Manager at the QGC upstream coal seam gas (CSG) contract, and later took over as Contract Director. “The company has over the years trusted me with some key positions and contracts that have allowed me to grow,” Stuart said. “I have worked in some challenging environments, from the extremes of Northern Alberta to Chinchilla and now Darwin.”

Keeping it local

As the senior Broadspectrum representative at the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG site, Stuart manages a team of more than 270 employees. Stuart is quick to acknowledge that he works with an exceptional group of Territorians. “I am extremely proud that we have recruited and maintained a 100 per cent local workforce.”

Broadspectrum’s TRACE JV regularly participates in local career expos, including the Clontarf Employment Forum and the Skills, Employment and Careers Expo, which provide wonderful opportunities to raise awareness among students about local career pathway options. Thanks to the efforts of Stuart and his team, many Territorians now know about employment opportunities with the joint venture.

Inclusion and diversity drive success

Stuart said he’s proud to work with organisations like Broadspectrum and INPEX who are staunch advocates for inclusion and diversity. “We have managed to tap into the local Indigenous talent pool, with 18 per cent of our workforce identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” Stuart said. Importantly, several Indigenous employees working on the contract hold senior technical positions.

Almost 10 per cent of Stuart’s team is female, covering roles such as scaffolders, riggers, instrumentation and electrical engineers, warehouse operators, and general service technicians. The team also boasts four female instrumentation and electrical apprentices. Other key female contributors work within the business support functions, covering human resources, HSE, contract administration, project controls, engineering and supply chain management. “Our site has some really strong, capable women who contribute to the contracts’ successes daily.”

A community-focused contract

In a geographically isolated location like Darwin, community engagement is a key contributor to a contract’s success. Broadspectrum’s TRACE JV actively participates in community events, including a recent four-day cultural camp at the Tiwi Islands run by Amity Community Services. The camp provided young Indigenous people with leadership development within a culturally appropriate framework. TRACE JV employees Eddie Clark and Lindsay Gerrard attended the camp as mentors and shared their inspirational life experiences with the camp participants. Stuart said, “The young people involved were able to talk and listen to the mentors and were clearly inspired to rethink their own goals and ambitions.”

Building confidence and capability

Operating a new facility comes with many challenges, including upskilling a large team. Under Stuart’s management, the TRACE JV team has successfully delivered several minor shutdowns, which have extended the capabilities of the team and instilled a quiet confidence amongst its members. Stuart’s plan is to prepare his core team of more than 270 employees for the contract’s first major shutdown, which will reduce the need for a large intake of new recruits and have a positive impact on quality and safety. Stuart said, “I’m confident this team will make a substantial positive contribution to our first major shutdown.”
