MTC-Broadspectrum joint venture awarded Parklea Correctional Centre contract
Frontline prison officers at Parklea Correctional Centre will be boosted under a new seven-year management contract between Broadspectrum and MTC with Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW).
The MTC-Broadspectrum joint venture will increase staff numbers with an additional 50 frontline employees on the contract to deliver prison management services with a focus on reducing reoffending and keeping the community safe.
The $90 million per annum contract includes security, transport, facilities management and maintenance, education, rehabilitation programs and health services through St Vincent’s Healthcare.
The joint venture companies’ capability to manage programs of work to keep inmates busy and reduce their chance of reoffending was key to securing this new contract.
MTC-Broadspectrum’s services will also expand following CSNSW’s upgrade to the Centre in 2019, delivering a new maximum-security unit, sporting facilities and visitor centre for inmates and their families. Inmate programs will include education, trade skills, and job-ready programs to form an integral part of improving support to inmates and the community.
Broadspectrum’s Chief Executive, Defence and Social Infrastructure, Derek Osborn, said: “We will be drawing on Broadspectrum’s experience to deliver best-practice outcomes for Parklea Correctional Centre for the security and safety of our staff, the community and inmates. We will also deliver effective property services based on our global facilities management expertise.”
New measures that will be put in place to increase security includes introducing technology and screening measures to detect mobile phone usage and contraband.
MTC’s President, Scott Marquardt, said: “MTC will bring its experience in rehabilitation resources, including education and trade skills to enable inmates to become more productive community members. We are committed to delivering improved prison operations.”
MTC-Broadspectrum will work with CSNSW to ensure the Centre is safe and secure; optimise opportunities for inmates’ rehabilitation; and provide facilities management services that support the uninterrupted availability of the Centre.
MTC-Broadspectrum will work closely with the current service provider and CSNSW to facilitate an orderly transition during the handover phase of this contract, commencing operations from 1 April 2019.
The contract includes a five-year extension option.
