Providing opportunities for local youth at risk
Broadspectrum is continuing its long-standing relationship with YMCA Bridge Project, supported by the Victorian YMCA, to collaborate in the rehabilitation of young offenders in the Juvenile Justice System. The program offers a supportive bridge between the transition of custody and life post-release by connecting young offenders to employers willing to provide training in vocational trade and leadership programs.
Broadspectrum has placed more than five young people in trades’ roles on several of its contracts in Victoria as well as in administration roles in its Corporate Office in Melbourne, boosting the young employees’ professional skills, providing purpose to succeed and sense of worth and responsibility, which effectively reduce the rates of youth recidivism.
In addition, Broadspectrum engages ReBuild, a branch of the YMCA Bridge Project which provides gardening, landscaping, painting, plastering, carpentry and general office duties.
Broadspectrum’s Chief Executive Government Services and Outsourcing, Derek Osborn interviewed one of the participants of the program in a video, which was screened at a YMCA Bridge Project breakfast attended by Broadspectrum employees and clients. “The interview allowed me to appreciate the opportunities I’ve had, and understand the young person’s life. It’s vital for large businesses like Broadspectrum to support programs like this as everyone deserves a second chance at life. I think it’s important for businesses to have the correct processes in place to equip the young person with the appropriate skills and confidence required to engage effectively in the local community.”
ReBuild Manager, Gary Sinclair was appreciative of Broadspectrum’s positive impact on the program: “Broadspectrum has been a great advocate in driving inclusion and equal opportunity by engaging our services since 2013 and in doing so has directly contributed to improvements in the lives of the disadvantaged young people with whom we work.”
Broadspectrum’s Community Engagement Approach includes enhancing opportunities for local youth at risk across all its industries.
