Broadspectrum increases Indigenous parity in business

Broadspectrum has employed 141 Indigenous Australians on 48 sites across its business since embarking on its plan to employ another 450 new Indigenous employees by 2020.

This achievement is the result of the company’s participation in the Indigenous Employment Parity Initiative (IEPI) since 2015, along with ten other Australian companies that are actively increasing Indigenous employment nationally.

The IEPI, which is overseen by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, aims to improve social equality for Indigenous people through job creation. Organisations involved in the initiative collectively aim to employ and retain 20,000 Indigenous job seekers by 2020.

Broadspectrum’s Chief Executive, Government Services and Outsourcing, Derek Osborn, said: “We are committed to closing the gap and are tracking well to reach our IEPI target of 450 new Indigenous employees by 2020. We have had particular success to date in the Northern Territory and Queensland, and in our Justice and Oil and Gas industries. An inclusive culture is just one way in which we seek to build our capability by ensuring we have a rich diversity of talented people in the organisation. I am proud of our latest intiative to recruit young Indigenous people into Broadspectrum.”

With more than 80 per cent of our employees living locally to where they work, new employees have a greater opportunity to stay close to their communities and families while accessing long-term career opportunities with the company.

Our Indigenous employees are also supported throughout their careers with learning and development programs. Equally, business leaders are encouraged to undertake comprehensive cultural sensitivity training to help engender an organisational atmosphere that promotes diversity and inclusion.

Broadspectrum has a long and proud history of promoting greater inclusion for Indigenous Australians. We have a governing Indigenous Advisory Board comprising six representatives from the Indigenous community and six senior leaders from Broadspectrum. We were the first services company to be awarded ‘Elevate’ status for its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) by Renconciliation Australia in recognition of our strong support and achievements furthering social equality.
