Transfield Services alliance contract wins top environmental award

A Transfield Services alliance has won Australia’s most prestigious environmental Award, the Banksia Award for the Gippsland Water Factory Project.

The Gippsland Water Factory Alliance comprises Gippsland Water, Transfield Services, CH2M HILL and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

The Gippsland Water Factory in Victoria represents a world first in industrial wastewater treatment technology, combined with the recycling of domestic waste for commercial use and the generation of power for the factory’s own consumption.

Transfield Services Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Peter Goode said “We are pleased to be part of such a complex, successful and cutting edge project. This is recognition of our alliance’s ability to deliver innovative wastewater treatment systems while addressing serious environmental and water recycling issues.”

Transfield Services and its alliance partners were responsible for the design, engineering, construction, commissioning and optimisation of the facility. Separately, Transfield Services provides maintenance services to the plant through its 13 year relationship with Gippsland Water In their award citation, the judges noted: “The project set a new standard for delivery of wastewater treatment infrastructure in Australia and resulted in a reduced volume and massive step-change improvement to the quality of treated industrial wastewater discharged to the ocean. Gippsland Water Factory goes well beyond compliance and is a project the community can be proud of.”

The Gippsland Water Factory was a finalist in three categories, winning both the Water and Education category awards, as well as the most prestigious Origin Gold Banksia Award.

Established in 1989, the Banksia Awards are Australia’s premier environmental awards, named after the distinctive Australian genus of wildflower found in coastal regions.
