Ferrovial Services will operate the Toledo Ecopark in Spain through GESMAT – a company it has a 60 per cent stake in – for 20 years.
The Toledo Ecopark processes 250,000 tonnes of waste annually and we are focusing on recovery, composting and recycling, as opposed to disposal. This creates a more sustainable future for our society.
We achieve this by using state-of-the-art technologies, including an automatic selection and sorting process using two lines that each handle 35 tonnes of waste per hour, plus an additional line for producing solid recovered fuel from light materials contained in the waste stream that cannot be reused as by-products.
The waste used for compost ferments and matures in a big warehouse. Modern gas scrubbers and biofilters take care of the odours – a necessary technology in this section of the Toledo Ecopark!
Materials remaining after the composting, separation and sorting processes are disposed of in a controlled landfill located within the Ecopark. This landfill site has a capacity of 5.8 million cubic metres and is also used for depositing waste materials from a nearby solid urban waste treatment plant operated by Ferrovial Services in Talavera de la Reina.
- 250,000 tonnes of waste processed annually
- 650,000 population of Toledo, where the waste is collected
- Our systems avoids generating 50,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year
- That’s the equivalent of 20,000 cars on the road
