Reducing methane emissions

An innovative collaboration

Broadspectrum is the principle contractor for the demonstration Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) Capture Duct project, which is part of the VAM Abatement Safety Project.

We uncover sustainable innovations by using all our available resources. This project is the first step to improving Australia’s environmental situation and we are proud to be at the helm.

Sponsored by the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), this project tackles multiple challenges. Obviously, the end game is to decrease methane emissions for the health of our environment, but we also assess existing technology and make it safer for workers. Additionally, we look to lower costs by integrating management capabilities during asset operations.

Working with our subsidiaries

We can confidently manage this large undertaking by collaborating with our project management and design subsidiaries, APP and ICD. With their assistance, we can create a pilot-scale prototype of chemical looping technology which can reduce emissions and then weigh-up whether or not it is a suitable solution to abate ventilation air methane from coal mining.

Huge reductions

Our proposed solution has the potential to decrease methane emissions from the coal mining sector by as much as 90 per cent, as well as reduce Australia’s annual greenhouse output by three per cent.

We’re excited about this cross-business work which partners with an academic institution to develop an innovation that does genuine good.
