Indigenous Participation

Our approach

 Broadspectrum is committed to building strong relationships with Indigenous communities and creating increased opportunities for employment and engagement.

We acknowledge Indigenous people as being the original carers of their lands and the importance of preserving their culture and customs.

In line with our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) we focus on the following areas:

  • Relationships - we see that having strong, sustainable and respectful relationships with Indigenous people and their communities is crucial to ‘closing the gap’ of disadvantage between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups;
  • Respect - we recognise and respect the local customs and practices of Indigenous people and their communities and the importance of these practices in preserving and protecting their culture; and
  • Opportunities - we are committed to providing long-term, sustainable employment, training, education and business opportunities for Indigenous people and their communities.

Measurements and accountability

The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) demonstrates Broadspectrum commitment to Australia’s national efforts to close the Indigenous life expectancy gap and outlines measurable actions that we are taking to increase Indigenous participation within the business.

Our Indigenous Advisory Board advises us on Indigenous relations and engagement, provides guidance and direction in implementing policies and practices, and challenges our Company to seek continual improvements. The Indigenous Advisory Board comprises members of Broadspectrum executive management team and senior representatives from the community.

South Australian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, the Honourable Stephen Mullighan launched Broadspectrum’ third Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) at Parliament House in Adelaide on 21 July 2015.

Key targets in Broadspectrum’ third RAP include:

  • Increase indigenous employment from 4.5% to 6.5% by 2018;
  • Increase procurement of indigenous subcontractors and suppliers to 2.0% in 2018, targeting 3.0% in 2020;
  • Establish an Indigenous Youth Council to inform Broadspectrum on how to best engage Indigenous young people into our organisation; and
  • Recruiting 10 indigenous interns.
